Third smallest medium owl species in Montana
These birds are silent for most of the year except during breeding season when they give a series of 10 to more than 200 “whoo” sounds spaced 2–4 seconds apart. The hoots are low and sound like blowing air across the top of a bottle. These songs can be heard more than half a mile away.
Their alarm calls range from barks and squeals to a raspy “mew” sound.
